Walking on Water

Matthew 14:22-33

Peter walked on water too — until he looked down.

After feeding the five thousand, Jesus sends the disciples ahead by boat and goes up a mountain alone to pray. In the early hours of the morning, the disciples are straining at the oars against a headwind. Jesus comes walking toward them on the water. They think it's a ghost and scream in terror. Jesus calls out: Take courage. It is I. Don't be afraid. Peter says: Lord, if it's you, tell me to come to you on the water. Jesus says: Come. Peter climbs out of the boat and walks on the water toward Jesus. Then he notices the wind, becomes afraid, and starts to sink. Lord, save me! Jesus catches him immediately: You of little faith, why did you doubt? They climb into the boat. The wind dies. The disciples worship him: Truly you are the Son of God.
