The Transfiguration

Matthew 17:1-13; Mark 9:2-13

For one moment on a mountain, they saw who he really was.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain. There, he is transfigured before them — his face shines like the sun, his clothes become dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them. Moses and Elijah appear, talking with Jesus. The Law and the Prophets standing with the one who fulfills them both. Peter, terrified and babbling, suggests building three shelters. A bright cloud covers them, and a voice speaks — the same voice from the baptism: This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to him. When the cloud lifts, Moses and Elijah are gone. Only Jesus remains. As they walk down the mountain, he tells them: Don't tell anyone what you've seen until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.
