Feeding the 5,000

John 6:1-15; Mark 6:30-44

Five loaves, two fish, five thousand men — and twelve baskets left over.

Jesus has been teaching a massive crowd all day in a remote place. Evening approaches. The disciples suggest sending everyone away to find food. Jesus says: You give them something to eat. They're incredulous — that would take eight months' wages. Andrew finds a boy with five small barley loaves and two fish. What good is that among so many? Jesus has everyone sit on the grass. He takes the bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and starts distributing. The food keeps coming. Five thousand men eat — plus women and children. When everyone is full, the disciples collect the leftovers: twelve baskets. One for each disciple who said it couldn't be done.
