Elijah's Chariot Of Fire

2 Kings 2:1-18

He never died. A chariot of fire took him straight to heaven.

Elijah knows his time is ending. Elisha — his apprentice, his successor — refuses to leave his side. They walk together from Gilgal to Bethel to Jericho to the Jordan. At each stop, Elijah tells Elisha to stay behind. Each time Elisha says: As surely as the Lord lives, I will not leave you. At the Jordan, Elijah strikes the water with his rolled-up cloak and the river parts. They cross on dry ground. Elijah asks: What can I do for you before I'm taken? Elisha asks for a double portion of Elijah's spirit. As they walk and talk, a chariot of fire and horses of fire appear, and a whirlwind sweeps Elijah up to heaven. Elisha watches, crying out: My father! My father! He picks up Elijah's fallen cloak.
