Elijah And The Still Small Voice

1 Kings 19:1-18

After fire from heaven, the prophet ran away — and God met him in the silence.

Fresh from the greatest victory of his life on Mount Carmel, Elijah receives a death threat from Jezebel and collapses. He runs into the wilderness, sits under a tree, and prays to die: I've had enough, Lord. Take my life. An angel feeds him. He walks forty days to Mount Horeb — the same mountain where God gave Moses the law. God asks: What are you doing here? Elijah pours out his despair. God sends wind that shatters rocks, then an earthquake, then fire — but God is in none of them. Then comes a gentle whisper, a still small voice. Elijah wraps his face in his cloak. God speaks again: Go back. You are not alone. I have seven thousand who haven't bowed to Baal.
