Solomon's Wisdom

1 Kings 3:1-28

God offered him anything. He asked for the one thing he couldn't earn.

Solomon is young and newly crowned when God appears to him in a dream: Ask for whatever you want. Solomon doesn't ask for wealth, long life, or victory over enemies. He asks for wisdom — a discerning heart to govern God's people and distinguish right from wrong. God is pleased. He grants Solomon wisdom beyond anyone before or after him, and throws in the wealth and honor Solomon didn't ask for. The wisdom is tested immediately: two women claim the same baby. Solomon orders the child cut in half. One woman agrees. The other cries out: Give her the baby — just don't kill him. Solomon hands the child to the real mother. All Israel hears, and they stand in awe.
