Solomon Builds the Temple

1 Kings 5:1–8:66

It took seven years to build the house that God said couldn't contain him.

David dreamed of building God a temple. God said no — your hands have shed too much blood. The task falls to Solomon. He marshals 30,000 laborers, 80,000 stonecutters, 70,000 carriers. Cedar from Lebanon, gold from Ophir, bronze cast in the Jordan valley. Seven years of construction. The inner sanctuary is overlaid with pure gold. When the ark of the covenant is placed inside, a cloud fills the temple so thick the priests cannot stand to minister. At the dedication, Solomon prays with stunning honesty: But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you — how much less this temple I have built?
