Absalom's Rebellion
2 Samuel 13:1–18:33
David's son stole the kingdom — and David wept for him anyway.
The consequences of David's sin ripple through his family. His son Amnon assaults his half-sister Tamar. David is furious but does nothing. Absalom — Tamar's full brother — waits two years, then murders Amnon and flees. He eventually returns to Jerusalem and begins stealing the hearts of the people, positioning himself at the city gate, offering justice David seems too distracted to provide. When the moment is right, Absalom declares himself king. David flees Jerusalem barefoot, weeping. Civil war follows. In the final battle, Absalom's famous hair catches in an oak tree. Joab kills him. David's response is one of the rawest moments in scripture: O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you!
