Lazarus Raised

John 11:1-44

Jesus wept. Then he shouted at a tomb — and the dead man walked out.

Lazarus is sick. His sisters Mary and Martha send word to Jesus: the one you love is ill. Jesus waits two days before going. By the time he arrives, Lazarus has been dead four days. Martha meets him: Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. Jesus says: Your brother will rise again. I am the resurrection and the life. At the tomb, Jesus weeps — the shortest verse in the Bible, and one of the most powerful. Then he orders the stone removed. Martha objects: Lord, by this time there is a bad odor. Jesus prays, then shouts: Lazarus, come out! The dead man walks out, still wrapped in burial cloths. Jesus says: Take off the grave clothes and let him go.
