Isaiah's Vision

Isaiah 6:1-13

He saw God on a throne and his first word was woe.

In the year King Uzziah dies, Isaiah sees the Lord — seated on a throne, high and exalted, his robe filling the temple. Seraphim fly above him, each with six wings, crying out: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty. The doorposts shake. The temple fills with smoke. Isaiah's response is not wonder but terror: Woe to me! I am ruined! I am a man of unclean lips. A seraph takes a burning coal from the altar and touches it to Isaiah's mouth: Your guilt is taken away, your sin atoned for. Then God's voice: Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? Isaiah answers immediately: Here am I. Send me. God does — with one of the hardest commissions any prophet ever received.
