The Crucifixion

Matthew 27:27-56; John 19:16-37

He saved others. Himself he could not save — because he wouldn't.

Roman soldiers strip Jesus, put a scarlet robe on him, twist thorns into a crown and press it onto his head. They mock him: Hail, King of the Jews! They spit on him, strike him, then lead him to Golgotha carrying his own cross until Simon of Cyrene is forced to carry it for him. At nine in the morning, they nail him to the cross. He speaks seven times. Father, forgive them — they don't know what they're doing. Today you will be with me in paradise. Woman, behold your son. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? I am thirsty. It is finished. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit. At noon, darkness covers the land for three hours. The temple curtain tears from top to bottom. A Roman centurion watching says: Surely this man was the Son of God.
