Matthew 26:36-56; Luke 22:39-53

He asked if there was another way. There wasn't.

Jesus takes Peter, James, and John deeper into the garden. His soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. He falls face down: My Father, if it is possible, take this cup from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will. He returns and finds them sleeping. He prays again. The same prayer. The same silence. Luke records that his sweat falls like drops of blood. Three times he prays. Three times they sleep. Then: Rise, let's go. Here comes my betrayer. Judas arrives with a crowd carrying swords and clubs. He identifies Jesus with a kiss. Peter draws a sword and cuts off a servant's ear. Jesus heals it. Put your sword away, he says. Don't you think I could call twelve legions of angels? All the disciples flee into the darkness.
