Legion and the Pigs

Mark 5:1-20

A man nobody could chain was set free by a word.

They reach the other shore and a man meets them among the tombs — naked, screaming, cutting himself with stones, so violent that chains can't hold him. The townspeople have given up. Jesus asks his name. The answer comes from many voices: My name is Legion, for we are many. The demons beg Jesus not to send them away — send us into those pigs instead. A herd of two thousand pigs is feeding on the hillside. Jesus permits it. The demons leave the man. The pigs stampede down the cliff into the sea and drown. When the townspeople arrive, they find the formerly possessed man sitting calmly, clothed, and in his right mind. They're afraid — not of the man, but of Jesus. They ask him to leave.
