Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5:1–7:29

He sat on a hillside and rewrote every rule they thought they knew.

Jesus climbs a hillside, sits down, and delivers the most revolutionary ethical teaching in history. He begins with the Beatitudes — blessings that invert every expectation: blessed are the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, the merciful, the persecuted. Then he raises the bar impossibly high. You've heard don't murder — I say don't even be angry. Don't commit adultery — don't even look with lust. Love your neighbor — love your enemies. Don't just give — give in secret. Don't just pray — pray like this. He teaches them what we now call the Lord's Prayer. He warns against judging others, tells them to build on rock not sand, and says the road to life is narrow. When he finishes, the crowds are astonished — because he teaches as one who has authority, not like their scribes.
