Nicodemus Visits Jesus

John 3:1-21

A religious leader came at night with questions — and heard the most famous verse ever spoken.

Nicodemus is a Pharisee, a member of the ruling council — and he comes to Jesus at night, under cover of darkness. He opens with a compliment: We know you are a teacher come from God. Jesus cuts straight past the pleasantries: Unless someone is born again, they cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus is bewildered: How can a man be born when he is old? Enter his mother's womb a second time? Jesus speaks of spiritual rebirth, of wind blowing where it pleases, of heavenly things. Then he delivers what will become the most quoted verse in history: For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
