The Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4:1-11; Luke 4:1-13
The devil offered him the world. Jesus quoted Deuteronomy.
Immediately after his baptism, the Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness. Forty days. No food. Then the devil arrives with three offers. Turn stones to bread — use your power for yourself. Jump from the temple — force God to prove himself publicly. Bow to me and I'll give you all the kingdoms of the world — take a shortcut to the throne. Each temptation targets something real: physical need, identity, mission. Each time Jesus responds with scripture — three quotes from Deuteronomy, the same book Israel failed to live out during their forty years in the wilderness. Where Israel broke, Jesus holds. The devil leaves. Angels come and attend him.
