The Boy Jesus in the Temple

Luke 2:41-52

His parents lost him for three days. He was right where he belonged.

Jesus is twelve. His family makes the annual trip to Jerusalem for Passover. On the way home, Mary and Joseph travel a full day before realizing Jesus isn't with them — they assumed he was somewhere in the caravan. They rush back to Jerusalem and search for three frantic days. They find him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening, asking questions, astonishing everyone with his understanding. Mary says what any parent would: Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you. Jesus' response is his first recorded words: Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house? They don't understand. He goes home and is obedient to them.
