David and Jonathan

1 Samuel 18:1–20:42

The prince loved the man who would take his throne — and gave it to him willingly.

After David kills Goliath, something remarkable happens: Jonathan — Saul's son, heir to the throne — bonds with David instantly. He strips off his own robe, armor, sword, and belt and gives them to the shepherd. It's more than friendship; it's a prince recognizing who God has chosen and accepting it. As Saul descends into jealous rage, hunting David across the wilderness, Jonathan protects his friend at the cost of his own future. They make a covenant. They weep together. Jonathan sends David away to save his life, knowing he's helping the man who will sit on the throne that should have been his.
